History of lye soap

Lye soap is something that has been around for innumerable generations.  Back before things like this were mass produced, lye soap was made at home, with ingredients pulled from everyday activities.  The lye was taken from burning wood in the fireplace, and the lard used was taken from butchered animals.  There was a lot of hard work, and tons of mixing that went into making homemade lye soap.  It was also a delicate process.  If there was too much lye in the soap, and not enough lard, the soap would burn the skin on contact.  If not enough lye was added to the mixture, it would never set.  It was a long process, many times of just plain trial and error.
Since those days long ago, lye soap has become easier to make, as well as purchase.  Many people today still prefer to use lye soap, and if it is your preference, there are many ways to make it, and many places to get it.  If you can’t find lye soap in a local shop, there are many options online.  One of the great benefits of lye soap is that it is an all natural product.  With lye soap, there are generally not additives thrown in.  Many companies that produce lye soap are now adding things such as aloe or coconut oil to make it a little easier on the skin.  Traditionally lye soap has been more harsh on the skin, as it was made not only for washing hands and bodies, but also things like clothes, dishes, and more.
